Cheyenne's project

NJHS, because of our military and veteran affiliation most of her projects are based around helping these people. She has decided to put together a program to provide quilts/blankets for every wounded soldier who comes home to Fort Riley, Richard has helped get her set up with the WTB (wounded soldier transition battalion) and we will be making quilts for as many of these soldiers as we can, where you come in....it is time consuming and expensive to do so many blankets, so she is asking any of you who are able to help to help her.We want to put together lab size quilts, blankets, afgains, if you know how to make any of these and would like to make and donate one it would be greatly appriciated, if you do not know how to make them and would just like to donate materials that to would be appriciated as well, any type of material and or batting it great.I just taught my girls to make the fleese tied blankets so Cheyenne will be making those herself, she is also going to get together girls from her school and offer them a class on how to make them, and the end results will be donated. I am teaching her to tie quilts so she will also be able to make some like that as well. Since we get new soldiers home every day this will be an ongoing progject for her, we hope we will be able to get as many people as possible involved, this should be a great experience for her and hopfully will bring some comfort to our returning soldiers. If you wish to help and do not know our address to send your items feel free to contact me for information, also please feel free to enlist help from any of your friends as well.Together we can make a diference for those who have given so much for us.Edi and Cheyenne

Richards scar

Here is a picture of Rich's scar, it is about two inches long and stapled, we will get those removed next week, until then we just have to clean it with alcohol and change the dressing twice a day. He is starting to get a bit stir crazy now as he is starting to feel a little better, but still cannot sit up for more than 45 minutes at a time, they do encourage his to walk so he has been able to do that, but that is about it, inbetween every little thing he does he has to go back and lay down, that is making him nuts, and we are only a week in....five more to go poor guy.

Good News

Cheyenne got nominated and them accepted into the Junior National Honor Society, we are so proud of her! She will be having a induction ceremony later this month, very few kids were accepted so it really is an honor. Her grades are great (obviously) and she has made several good friends, it is good as she had a really hard time moving from all her friends and activities in Utah, seems like she has finally adjusted and found her little niche, that is not to say she does not still miss Utah and her friends, but luckily we have cell phone (with free minutes) and internet so she can stay in touch, and I have promised her a trip back there this summer to hang out with them.

He's Home

I was able to bring Richard home from the hospital yesterday, he did not sleep well at all while he was there, tonight he is finally sleeping peacefully, I just had to wake him up to make sure he took his pain meds, I did not want him to sleep to long and wake up in terrible pain! He is getting up and around very well, he says once he is up it feels good to walk around a bit, it is just the getting up and back down that is hard. He has a two inch incision in his back and staples, the first night he was getting a lof of blood and fluid from it, but it looks pretty good now. He will have to be off work 6 weeks, but luckily that is convelesant leave so it is seperate from his regular leave time. He can not drive for two to three weeks, can not sit up for more than 45 minutes at a time right now, no house or garden work for awhile, but all in all he is doing good and seems well on the way to recovery. I am just happy he is home now where I can keep an eye on him and know he is okay.

Richards surgery

Well I am happy to say Richard is out of surgery, as I write this we are sitting in his very nice room, with its private patio, complete with plants and furniture, his nurse has been in several times to make sure he is comfortable, so they were not kidding when they said (the surgical center) it would be more like a hotel then a hospital. Much nicer to recuperate in. The surgery went well, he was in about an hour and a half, so less time then I expected, he seems to be doing fine now, a bit of pain, but they have him on a morphine drip and so he should be okay pain wise. I will be able to take him home tomorrow night or Saturday afternoon, we are not sure which yet. He does have his cell phone and is able to have it on, should any of you wish to call him. I will keep you up to date as he recovers.

surgery

well we have decided to take the nuro surgeons recommendations and have Richards surgery on his back done next week. They will make a small incision in is back and shave some of the disk off to relieve pressure on the nerves. It is a pretty simple surgery as far as surgery goes, one night in the hospital and about 6 weeks to full recovery. The doctor seems confident that he will be able to do sit ups and walk fine afterwards so he can continue with his plan to return to regular duty and finish out this last three years. Richard seems to be happy with the decison to have the surgery, at this point I think anything that would give him some relief would be welcomed, so surgery is set for the 16th, wish us luck.

The stress of moving!!!

Well, I think we have decided to move over Memorial Day weekend, so Colt doesn't have to take leave. That way he can take all 30 days of leave after recruiting school. We still don't think that the military will help us pay for the move because Colt won't have orders to Utah yet. So, that is where the "we think" we will be moving in May, it totally depends on if we have the money. The only thing that sucks is if we don't move by the first of June then we will lose the house. The whole situation sucks and just might kill my nerves.
We are going to have some garage sales to try and earn some extra money, but I don't think that will give us very much funds. I am just trying to have faith that it will work out. We could use all the prayers we can get. Thanks

Richards discogram

We went to the hospital today for Richard to have a discogram, I had never heard of such a thing, but basically it meant they stuck rods and then needles into his spine, BIG needles from his hip over to his spine into the disc, then they inject dye and try to recreate the pain he is having so they can decide what is causing it and how to treat it. They told us it would hurt, but it was supposed to be over (the painful part) in about 5 minutes, so the whole thing is supposed to take about an hour, well after I had been waiting for him for an hour and a half they brought him out and said it did not go well, they had a terrible time getting the third needle in, the "painful" part took 45 minutes, he was grey, shaking and looking terrible when I saw him. Usually they keep you for an hour after for observation, but the doctor wanted him to stay three to make sure he was okay, his blood pressure got very high and we could not get his pain under control afterwards. They gave him two shots of fentynal, two lortabs, a valium, and his pain was still not going down, they finally added some toradol and it was bearable though not gone. We have to see his Nuro-surgeon (who ordered the tests next week) for the full results, but this doctor did tell us they found a biladeral tear in one disk and the bottom was was "just a mess" as he put it.
The dye spread out all over after they put it in. He says this is on the top three things to never do!!!! He really handles pain well so for him to say it was almost unbearable says a lot.
I have him home resting now, he cannot go back to work until after tomorrow (his birthday no less) even resting in our nice bed he is having trouble getting comfortable. I hope we will get some options now that will help make it better for him, his original injury that most likely started all this was 13 years ago so he has been living with it for a very long time.
Clint have you ever heard of this procedure? I would be interested to hear what you know about it.

Girls Day

The girls and I went to the Wizard of Oz museum today, I have wanted to go since we got here and just have not gotten there, so today we did, they enjoyed it. We had lunch afterward and then took the scenic way home, driving threw Alma the old "stone town" where everything was originaly built from the local stones, there are some gorgeous big old houses there similair to the Valley House, we stopped by a spot from the "Mormon Trail" where the pioneers passed by, it is still maked by a wood sign you can barely read anymore. The girls at the museum

Crater Lake Oregon

Richard's sister took us up to Crater Lake today, it was so gorgeous, even though there is no snow in town it was well over the car when we got to the lake, most of the buildings are still completely covered, I would love to come back and see it in the summer now, here are a couple pictures so you can sort of see how pretty it is.

Monday, March 23, 2009

We are having a great time in Oregon, today we went on a hike, absolutely gorgeous scenery, we hiked up to see a big foot trap, I guess some guy built it in 1974 after seeing tracks, no big foot was caught, but some bears were I guess. I had never heard of a big foot trap, so it was a fun outing.

It is looking good!!

I am sure you all have heard from Colt, but I thought I would put the good news here too. We will be moving back to Utah in June. Colt goes to recruiting school the 7th of July and will graduate the 28th of August then he will be joining us in Utah. We have a house to rent, barring we can get enough money saved to move by June. The military won't move us because Colt won't have his orders until he is done with school. If we wait until then we will lose the house. The house is in the neighborhood we used to live in, so you see why we can't and don't want too wait.
We are all just praying things work out. I am sure things will change so we will keep you all posted.

I know very well that she has a large family compared to mine, communication with you guys is great. I am sure you will all like my side 2 bro's and a sis' (yep I am the youngest) I would like to thank Marjorie, Nichol, EJ and Amber for making their way here for our day. I do think for the kids Steve will always be a big part in their lives, I would never jepordize that. I am a proud stepfather and I certainaly would never attempt to compromise his integrity. Anyways as Clint and EJ should know I am really easy going. Some day soon I will retire from the Army, one thing though will never change. Edi is my Angel!!

wedding update

An update on the wedding reception, it looks like we are going to move it to Texas, Richards brother has a nice place down there and his sister is in the process of moving there, since she was the one helping us plan it all and it will be difficult for her to get back to Oregon we have decided to move it, now we are looking at hotel options for people traveling in, his brother is seeing if we can get any kind of group discount.

Hello Everyone

Welcome to our family blog, a place where we can all keep in touch even with so many miles between us.
