We went to the hospital today for Richard to have a discogram, I had never heard of such a thing, but basically it meant they stuck rods and then needles into his spine, BIG needles from his hip over to his spine into the disc, then they inject dye and try to recreate the pain he is having so they can decide what is causing it and how to treat it. They told us it would hurt, but it was supposed to be over (the painful part) in about 5 minutes, so the whole thing is supposed to take about an hour, well after I had been waiting for him for an hour and a half they brought him out and said it did not go well, they had a terrible time getting the third needle in, the "painful" part took 45 minutes, he was grey, shaking and looking terrible when I saw him. Usually they keep you for an hour after for observation, but the doctor wanted him to stay three to make sure he was okay, his blood pressure got very high and we could not get his pain under control afterwards. They gave him two shots of fentynal, two lortabs, a valium, and his pain was still not going down, they finally added some toradol and it was bearable though not gone. We have to see his Nuro-surgeon (who ordered the tests next week) for the full results, but this doctor did tell us they found a biladeral tear in one disk and the bottom was was "just a mess" as he put it.
The dye spread out all over after they put it in. He says this is on the top three things to never do!!!! He really handles pain well so for him to say it was almost unbearable says a lot.
I have him home resting now, he cannot go back to work until after tomorrow (his birthday no less) even resting in our nice bed he is having trouble getting comfortable. I hope we will get some options now that will help make it better for him, his original injury that most likely started all this was 13 years ago so he has been living with it for a very long time.
Clint have you ever heard of this procedure? I would be interested to hear what you know about it.
